Musical Performance

Concerts, musical events, music competitions, rehearsal space

Performance and recording are supported by the extraordinary and beautiful acoustic of this ancient building, which routinely draws cries of appreciation from visiting artists. “It’s the sort of place that makes you want to sing or perform”. Resonant without echoing standing waves, the responsive and clean acoustic make small ensemble performance, whether instrumental or choral a delight for performers and audience alike. It is a wonderful place for a concert.

Examples of concerts in the last couple of years include music by the children’s choir of the local All Saints School, touring choirs, local choral groups, BBC Symphony Orchestra soloist ensemble, Grand Opera from Opera North singers to the big blast from the Rothwell Temperance Brass Band. Several of these groups have used the venue for recording as well as giving concerts (see below).

With the flexible seating plans available, performance can be in the round or more formally along the axis of the aisle. Up to 30 performers can, and have been accommodated. With a large ensemble such as a Brass Band, the church can seat 120 with clear sight lines; more with smaller groups such as chamber groups. Additional seating can be accommodated for sell out events but not all will enjoy clear sight lines.

Recording Venue

Several choirs, instrumentalists and singers have used the church for recording. Set in quiet countryside and away from heavy traffic and flight paths recording is unlikely to be interrupted. A soundproof recording booth set over the vestry in the church has a plate glass front that allows technicians a good view of the musicians.

With two excellent pubs within a minutes’ walk, good parking and access for handling bulky instruments the church is in a breathtaking setting. Being close to the cities of towns of West and North Yorkshire ensure easy access for your audience. Furthermore the people of the village give all events good support and will boost numbers of any concert.
